Important facts
  • At this time, all blood types are needed. Blood type O-negative is always in need because these donors are the universal blood donors, meaning their whole blood and red blood cell donations can help any patient even if the patient’s blood type is different. For cases where blood type cannot be immediately assessed, e.g., motor vehicle accident victims with massive blood loss, Blood Type O-negative is the blood that is used. Blood type O-negative is also used for premature and young babies.
  • It’s the blood already on hospital shelves that saves lives. That’s why it’s crucial we constantly replenish the supply so that we’re prepared for the Labor Day Holiday.
  • It’s vital that we maintain a safe and adequate blood supply for patients who need it, especially as we enter the Labor Day week— typically a time when we see fewer blood donations because people are busy, or out of town.
  • Blood is always needed for patients undergoing surgery, receiving treatment for cancer or needing transfusions on a routine basis. Every two seconds someone needs blood.
  • The best way to be ready for a disaster or severe weather is to have a strong blood supply. So, we encourage people to donate blood regularly—and to make and keep their blood donation appointments.
